The new year has arrived in Colorado! Celebrate 2019 at one of these local events without breaking the bank.
1. Art & Music at Pikes Perk
Celebrate the art of Christie Lee at Pikes Perk on January 5th beginning at 6 pm. On the first Friday of each month, Pikes Perk hosts a new event for the community. This January will feature the music of Zoe Anderson and The Beatidudes to ring in the new year and highlight Lee’s unique craft. Attendance for the show is free, but there will be a variety of dishes available for purchase, as well as teas, espresso, lattes, and more.
2. Mindfulness Group
Start the new year off right by taking a moment to reflect and destress. On January 2nd, join Kristine at 7 pm for a 90-minute Mindfulness Group session. Join others from around the Briargate area to share your own experiences with mindfulness or to learn more about meditation and other stress-relieving techniques. Attendance is free, but a $5 to $10 donation is suggested.
3. Featuring the Art of James Christensen
Don’t miss your chance to witness the art of James Christensen at the Art Gallery of the Rockies. From January 2nd to 5th, his artwork will be on display during gallery hours. Christensen is inspired by the works of Shakespeare and British and Irish history and folklore. Full of whimsical and mystical images and colors, his art is calming, yet enticing. Admission is free and the gallery has works for purchase by various local, regional, and national artists both in person and on their website.
4. Press the Pause Button and Drop Your Baggage
Join Chris and Malar from Pause Your Life on January 5th for a special monthly meditation and reflection practice at East Library on North Union Boulevard. This month’s session is called “Press the Pause Button and Drop Your Baggage” where attendees will metaphorically drop their troubles into the Universe Box. The event will begin at 10 am in the East F1 room on January 5th and reoccurs every first Saturday of the month.
5. Abundance Fair
Starting at 11 am on January 5th, join local business owners, non-profits, and other Coloradoans for the Abundance Fair at Library 21c on Chapel Hills Drive. This is a great networking opportunity for those looking to expand their social circle within Colorado Springs while you shop and learn about small business in the community. Admission to the event is free, but attendees are encouraged to register online.
6. Board Game Night at Petrie’s Family Games
Every Thursday in January, Petrie’s Family Games will be hosting Board Game Nights beginning at 6 pm. Petrie’s has a variety of in-house games to choose from and guests are encouraged to bring their own games, as well. 7. Indian cooking classes at Polka Dots and Curry
Throughout January, Polka Dots and Curry will be hosting Indian cooking classes and teaching participants how to make traditional meals that are both delicious and healthy. They offer meatless and vegan classes featuring fermented pancakes, coconut chutney, and three bean vegan chili, as well as curry nights each Thursday. 8. Academy Art & Frame Company Exhibitions
The Academy Art and Frame Company is always featuring new local artists. January will emphasize the artwork of Colorado Springs native Andre Eddens, who didn’t realize his artistic potential until he broke his foot and picked up drawing and painting to pass the time while he healed. For the past twenty years, he has perfected his crafts and picked up photography, as well. Don’t forget to vote for your favorite piece for the 11th annual High School Student Ceiling Tiles Competition while you’re there and browse through their large collection of digital, physical, and mixed media art.
9. US Air Force Academy Sports
The U.S. Air Force Academy just north of Briargate will be hosting several sports games throughout the month, including basketball, ice hockey, wrestling, and fencing. Come out and support Colorado’s Air Force Falcons as they play against other schools from around Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. Check out their schedule for games, times, and tickets.
10. Joule Indoor Cycling and Hot Yoga
Throughout January, Joule will be hosting a variety of group sessions to start the new year. Joule offers classes for all levels, including introductory Forrest Yoga and Spicy Hot Yoga, as well as different cycling and spin classes. You can sign up for a single session for $18 or take advantage of their new member special: one month for $59. They also open special packs for up to 10 classes that are good until December of 2020.
